Morning Hype! Mike Patton Week

In celebration of FINALLY being afforded the privilege of witnessing the incomparable Mike Patton on stage tomorrow night with his current project Tomahawk, this weeks Morning Hype!'s will all be dedicated to strangeness that is Mike Patton and some my favorite works by his too many to name different projects, both solo and collabs. We'll start with what got me started. Faith No More. Patton joined after the group had grown tired of the revolving door of lead singers, including the most recently fired Chuck Mosley and at one point, Courtney Love(?). Having heard him when he slipped the band a demo of his Mr. Bungle project, FNM tracked him to down in the Bay Area and after stating he would work with them in equal parts to Mr. Bungle, he joined on. That didn't quite work out as planned as the first Patton fronted album The Real Thing, became a genre smashing hit, mixing elements of rap and rock and producing the bands biggest hit Epic. I clearly remember MuchMusic(Canada's MTV) always playing Epic in a block with Poison's Unskinny Bop, which made it easy to read into the death of Glam Rock. FNM was clearly the future. My personal favorite album, Angel Dust, came next, and while successful with a string of heavy rotation singles, it didn't reach quite the heights of The Real Thing. Two more albums followed: King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime and Album Of The Year, but a constantly rotating cast and Patton's unrelenting thirst for different projects caused the band to disband in 1998. There have been intermittent reunion shows and even a tour, but a full fledged coming together seems out of the question right now. Oh well, I guess it never hurts to have something to hope for. A track from each of Faith No More's Patton fronted albums below.
