Yesterday Mike Patton's Ipecac label released Black Pudding, a new collaboration between Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood. Recorded at Pink Duck studios and mixed by another frequent collaborator of Lanegan's Alain Johannes, this is the dark blues at it's finest. I didn't know much about Garwood beyond Lanegan calling him one of his "favorite artists of all time", he's a multi-instrumentalist who also appears on Lanegan's Blues Funeral. He plays clarinet on the new album by post punk darlings Savages, which is also in heavy rotation these days and has released four albums under his own moniker while generally seeming to be pretty well respected, judging by the company he keeps anyways. A brooding album this is, haunting even, but in classic Lanegan fashion it is also completely engrossing, making it difficult to focus on anything but. An immediate favorite of this year.
